|
Thai Olympic gold medalist boxer Somluck Kamsing has confirmed the rumor that he will fight martial artist star Jean-Claude Van Damme in a muaythai match in March next year. Somluck, the first Thai gold medalist who won the featherweight boxing event at the Atlanta Games in 1996, has confirmed the earlier report that he has signed a contract on September 4 to fight in a match against the Belgium-born Van Damme, who is best known for his roles in Hollywood action movies. Somluck said the match, consisting of five two-minute rounds, will be held in Las Vegas, in March 2010 using muaythai rules, although elbow will be barred. He said he would be paid US$150,000 plus US$25,000 as training fee as well as a 2% share from broadcast revenue. “I never thought about this possibility at all, but all the sudden Van Damme’s team called me, saying they tracked me down from a hotel employee who knew me. They want me to fight with muaythai style, except the elbows because they don’t want his face to get bruised, because he is an actor,” said Somluck. The Thai fighter said the action movie star knew him from a K-1 event in Turkey he fought earlier this year. Somluck said he would have to prepare himself well in order the fight the much larger Van Damme, but believes he would be able to defeat him with his superior muaythai skill and experience. Source: Siam Sport http://www.siamsport.co.th/Sport_Boxing/090906_167.html There's no actual fight date been announced yet, just 'March 2010'. Because of the hollywood nature of this match, if the fight does not go ahead in March, this bet will be cancelled and all money refunded at 100%. For this bet, the option, 'none of the above' does not apply to the fight not going ahead in March 2010. So, you are betting on IF the fight goes ahead, what will the result be? |

| sid 10/01/2010 14:27 | From today's Bangkok Post: Somluck-Van Damme fight 'closer' * Published: 10/01/2010 at 09:17 PM * Online news: Breakingnews Olympic featherweight boxing champion Somluck Kamsing may actually fight international martial arts star Jean-Claude Van Damme in a K1 Muay Thai match in Las Vegas by March, according to the boxing website BoxingScene.com In a report from one of its reporters, the website said there was also a chance the showdown not occur before October. Reportedly, the 38-year-old Atlanta Olympic Games gold medalist and the 49-year-old Hollywood star signed a contract on Dec 29 in a Bangkok hotel. The report said the match will use the Muay Thai format, although elbows will be disallowed at the request of Van Damme who doesn't want his face cut up or disfigured. Somluck will be paid 3.5 million baht (just over $100,000) which does not include the income from broadcasting. "I said I wasn't lying," said Somluck, referring to his earlier comments about the possibility of this match. Somluck is well known for his tendency to exaggerate things. BoxingScene.com quoted the Olympic gold medalist as saying: "I thought he was of much larger stature. But when we were standing next to each other, he wasn't any bigger than me. So, I'm confident now. I'm better in Muay Thai techniques and I will have fun kicking the star. However, I won't be careless and will keep training myself." Somluck has said he is also hoping to be able to fight other international martial arts stars. |
